Dirty Lettuce - Portland, Oregon

Visited on 06/10/2023

An Honest Review: Dirty Lettuce is not dirty in the slightest. In fact, this vegan soul food restaurant has some of the cleanest vegan food around. That is because we completely cleaned our plates! The only things that were dirty at Dirty Lettuce were our faces, fingers, and our napkins. With a name like 'Dirty Lettuce', we just had to check out this soul/southern food goodie located in good ole' Portland, Oregon. This amazing restaurant popped up after I moved out of Portland, so this was my first time visiting after moving home. I was pleasantly surprised by the quaint, clean, modern interior with a homey feel and relaxed atmosphere. The employee running the front was super friendly and helpful, and gave us plenty of time to investigate the menu and make our decisions. In addition to the restaurant, there was a small shop of items such as stickers and clothing from local artists and businesses near where you pay for the food, so I also picked up some souvenirs for the flight home while buying our food.

Speaking of food, we absolutely adored and loved the food we tried from Dirty Lettuce. We bought two Mela drinks from the cooler inside the restaurant, which were delicious (especially on a hot summer West Coast day). For an appetizer, we ordered the Fried Wings with a buffalo-style hot sauce and a side of vegan ranch. The texture of the vegan chicken was tender, soft, and was also perfectly seasoned. Paired with a tasty, light, crispy breading and mouth-watering sauces, and you have yourself a winner! We ate those wings without stopping for a break- they were simply phenomenal. For the main meal, we ordered a plate with Portobello Fries, Fried Chicken, and a side of Cajun Mac and Cheeze. In short, Dirty Lettuce absolutely nailed everything we sampled. The Portobello Fries were perfectly fried, and were light and seasoned to pure perfection. The Fried Chicken pieces sent the both of us into a state of bliss, and the dipping sauces were bold, flavorful, and finger-licking. Everything we put in our mouths gave us the feeling of, "Oh my goodness... this is what vegan food should taste like". My boyfriend loved the vegan chicken from Dirty Lettuce so much, he actually considered buying a frozen bag from the restaurant and sending it home with us in our luggage. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough room! Next time, we may just end up stashing some vegan chicken in our bags. It is seriously that good.
