Twisted Plants - Milwaukee, Wisconsin

An Honest Review: Twisted Plants... wow, we sure got twisted with this one. With a menu of vegan items named after stoner movies, this was an easy choice on our trip up north to the cold winds of Michigan for my 27th birthday. We found this place on a whim, trying to find a vegan restaurant in Milwaukie that would be open late by the time we arrived. This place delivered on vibes and food quality big time, for being a random find especially. I walked in expecting to have a good meal, but I left having had an honestly spectacular vegan food experience. The environment was stellar, with the walls being lovingly covered in art, paintings, and stoner movie posters. As we were eating, we were busy looking around and taking in every fun and unique aspect of our environment.

Now, to the food. Being absolutely ravenous from travel, we started with two appetizers: Mozz Sticks, and also an order of their Dazed and Confused Hot wings. Let me just say- these two appetizers blew my preconceived notions of vegan food out of the water, being quite notable in the vegan cheese and vegan chicken department. Both of these items were as real-tasting as one could want- the Mozz Sticks being perfectly fried, and perfectly melty and stringy when bitten into. The wings were honestly the best home-made vegan wings I have tried. They were thick, juicy, tasty, and extremely close to an authentic chicken wing in look and taste- they even had a layer of skin on the vegan chicken wing (most likely rice paper). I love that kind of effort, and how well Twisted Plants pulled off the texture and flavors of the wing, as well as the fried quality and taste. As someone who grew up in Florida eating hot chicken wings with my dad, I was highly impressed. I will for sure be back for a few orders of the wings. Next, our main items arrived- the Up in Smoke (BBQ bacon burger), and the Soul Plane (Buffalo chik'n sandwich). These were highly impressive, and we enjoyed these sandwiches on the road the next day in our hotel because they were so good. They simply could not be wasted! Take my word for it- these burgers and sandwiches are extremely delicious. The buns, vegan meat, vegan cheeses, and vegan sauces all taste authentic, and are just made with love (you CAN taste it). I could tell that whoever designed the menu takes prides in the food that they make, and the ingredients being used in their food as well. For dessert, we decided on some shakes- a Dirt Cake Shake (Oreos and chocolate ice cream), and a Banana Shake (bananas blended with chocolate ice cream). These delivered on taste, texture, and also quality as well. I would definitely have a go at their other shakes, since there are so many options and they leave us feeling so happy and satisfied. They will substitute in vanilla or chocolate ice cream for any of their shakes, if requested. This is a hidden gem in the Midwest that we simply are so grateful to have found, for the energy, and for the food! We will most surely be back to try other items, and to document that journey as well.

Second Visit:

After our first dive into this joint, we had to go back to experience the excellent vibes and flavors again. We stopped at a different location than our first visit, and the quality was just as on point as the first spot. Because of that consistency, we had some similar items as our first visit, but changed it up a bit with some others. We stayed consistent with the Dazed and Confused, Soul Plane, and Dirt Cake Shake. All three items delivered on quality and taste, and had us drooling a second time around while waiting for our order to come out. To keep things interesting and our food choices fresh, I had to go for the Still Smokin' and the Lemon Crunch Cake Shake- they were ridiculously delicious. I was born a mushroom and swiss girl, and that burger hit that spot in my soul- let me tell you. The Lemon Crunch Cake Shake was stellar, cosmic, wonderful, fantastic, sweet, tangy, creamy, and cakey! I would drive 90 minutes from home to Milwaukee just to have a lunch here any weekend! We were mesmerized during and after our second visit, and are sure to be back soon for a bunch of other new items to try. This find is a perfect spot for vegans and plant-based curious humans alike while driving up north to magnificent midwestern nature.
